Ops: 23 Detained by Malaysia Immigration

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-three Nepalese security guards were detained by Immigration Department officers at an upmarket commercial area in Mont Kiara.

The guards, aged between 20 and 40, were held after they could not produce valid travel documents and were believed to have also overstayed.

“Also, we found that their identification documents were kept by their employer.

“We will also be investigating this,” said Putrajaya Immigration deputy assistant director Mohd Izzat Mohd Jamil.

Those detained will be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963.

The Immigration Department has been conducting Ops 6P Bersepadu to flush out unwanted foreigners in the country since Sept 1.

More than 5,000 foreigners without proper documents have been rounded up since the operation began.

It was announced on Wednesday that the legalisation of illegal immigrants, being carried out under a current programme, would not be extended.

However, a special programme to manage illegal immigrants will begin on Oct 21 to help solve applications by employers whose workers could not be legalised after being cheated by employment agents.

This programme, which will go on until Jan 20 next year, will run concurrently with Ops 6P.
