Police have busted an internet scam syndicate made up of two Nigerian men, a local woman and a Japanese woman after two women were reported to have been cheated of 100,000 ringgit last month.
Acting on information the Perak Commercial CID detained the suspects, aged between 30 and 50 in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan on July 25.
The victims were a 32-year-old nurse from Taiping who lost 90,000 ringgit and a 40-year-old teacher from Ipoh who lost 12,000 ringgit.
Datuk Mohd Shukri said, the syndicate had been active for the past three years.
Its modus operandi was befriending the victims through Facebook and Twitter with profiles as foreign individuals who were personable, rich and religious.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which upon conviction carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years and caning and fine.
