The government is studying on setting only one rate for the levy on foreign workers in all sectors.
The August house was informed that this would help curb their movement from one sector to another.
Replying to a question by Tanah Merah MP Deputy Home Minister Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the problem was partly due to the employers’ inability to pay the levy in certain sectors.
He added that the foreigners were limited to work in five sectors namely agriculture, manufacturing, construction, services and trading .. to ensure they would not affect local livelihoods.
To date 744 foreign workers were detained for misusing their work permit by moving into another sector, this year.
