A single mother from Thailand was sentenced to death by the Alor Setar High Court today for trafficking more than 18 kilogrammes of drugs two years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab passed the sentence on Thitima Khongnun after he found the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The 30-year-old mother of two committed the offence near the Jitra Toll Plaza on the North-South Expressway on October 20, 2011.
She was travelling on board a bus heading to Kuala Lumpur from Changlun when the vehicle was stopped for inspection by the Customs Department.
The accused was detained by enforcement officers after they found 20 slabs of compressed cannabis inside her bag.
She was charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act, which provides a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
