Ex-Plymouth Argyle player Taribo West has been accused of lying about his age before he joined the city team.
The former Nigeria centre half, who also played for Derby County and Inter Milan, joined Serbian team Partizan Belgrade in 2002 claiming he was 28. Partizan’s ex-president, Zarko Zecevic, says West was actually 40 at the time.
“He joined us saying he was 28. We only later found out he was 40, but he was still playing well so I don’t regret having him on the team,” Zecevic said.
When West later tried to move on to Croatia’s Rijeka club, where a medical check-up alerted doctors that his knees were 44 years old and not the 32 that the defender claimed. He was not signed up.
West retired in 2008 from Iranian side, Paykan FC at age 46.
His Wikipedia page has two dates of birth, stating his current age at 39 and 46 years old.
